Cutting Ties

Cutting Ties is an interactive Theatre in Education program that educates young people on the facts about knife crime, the risks and the reasons as to why young people may carry a weapon.

  • Cutting Ties has been touring schools throughout the West Midlands and the wider areas for the past three years.
  • We hope that by reaching thousands of young people most at risk with our important message, we will reduce knife crime and anti-social behaviour, making communities safer.
  • Cutting Ties is an early intervention program that uses live performance, facilitation, discussion and creative to actively address key problems within the community.

Key Aims

  • Educate young people on the statistics and laws in regards to knife crime
  • Help young people to analyse their own actions and decisions, and those of their peers
  • Reduce the number of knife crime incidents and number of young people that carry weapons
  • Signpost young people to organisations/people they can turn to for help

The Performance

Cutting Ties is an hour long highly interactive performance. Our performance includes forum theatre which allows the audience to stop and change the action in the piece to provide a better outcome for the characters. Through this technique, we can open a dialogue with young people, ensuring that their voices are heard.

Long- Lasting Impact

At Round Midnight Creative Arts, we always consider the bigger picture, creating resources that ensure learning continues long after the initial performance. We produce and distribute follow on workshops and training resources for teachers for use in P.S.H.E lessons, tutor time or drama lessons.

 Our teaching pack consists of:

  • Knife- crime facts and case studies
  • Workshop Materials
  • Creative Teaching Techniques
  • Discussion Points
  • List that signposts young people to diversionary activities
“Feedback from staff and students was excellent, they were really impressed with the performance [...] I think the performance definitely had a positive impact on our students, and I hope you are able to continue to deliver performances as they are most important, and definitely needed."
S. Grant
St. George's Academy
"There is no doubt here that Round Midnight achieved their purpose of educating children around knife crime and as a result, preventing harm; this remains obvious months after the performance.”
A. Smith
Hamstead Hall Academy

Case Study

1) Performed 'Cutting Ties'

October 2019: School requested performance after incident in school with weapon

2) Initial Feedback from Safeguard Lead

“The theatre production was so relevant to the young people of today and the issues that they face. They saw how easy it was to get caught up in the carrying of a weapon but also saw that there are ways out of this and to speak up and ultimately to do the right thing."

3) 4 months later...

“The performance of Cutting Ties was amazing and has certainly had a lasting impact on the pupils who still talk about it now [...] We have had no issues in school since your performance which is proof in itself."

Our Supporters

With thanks to the support and funding of many organisations, Round Midnight Creative Arts are able to continue delivery of this program in schools up and down the country, spreading awareness of knife crime.

Round Midnight make sure that each school receives correct and up-to-date information about knife crime and the law. We recommend reporting crimes to Crime Stoppers and visiting Fearless.org for key “non-judgmental” information. Both Crime Stoppers and Fearless guarantee complete anonymity, so “Speak Up. Stay Safe”.
